Watermelon Slim And The Workers
Watermelon Slim and the Workers
Bill "Watermelon Slim" Homans sings like a baying basset, drawing the tongue-in-cheek misery of tunes like "Hard Times" and "Check Writing Woman" out in long, dry-mouthed syllables. But its the slide guitar on this, his third album, that really howls, whether hes playing smooth and shimmery on his original take on the Robert Johnson myth "Devils Cadillac" or drawing on the ghost of Elmore James on "Hard Labor." That blend of humor--always delivered from a skewed autobiographical perspective--and raw-boned backwoods virtuosity makes this one of the years more colorful blues albums and should elevate Slim from the genres underground. And while his backing trio, the Workers, are a crack outfit whose spare accompaniment beautifully frames Slims laconic musings, the solo "Folding Money Blues"--just Slim moaning along with his acoustic guitar--is a high point, with Slim telling his complaints to all the "dead presidents." I saw these guys live at Legends on a field trip to Chicago...and I was blown away. Im not your typical blues fan, in fact, I never owned a blues album before this one (Im more of a metal-head). If you are new to the genre or trying to find something fresh in the blues world, then check out this cd.
Some of my personal favorite songs are "Foldin Money Blues", "Baby Please Dont Go", and "Bad Sinner". You wont be disappointed with anything on the CD. Watermelon Slim and the Workers really deliver the goods here.

"Watermelon Slim and the Workers" is the kind of CD that one should play to a group of friends assembled for a game or cards or dice on the porch. Nobody will know what is playing, but everybody will like this fresh-sounding take on the blues.
Mr. Homans penned most of the tracks here, and he delivers his musical tales in a howl that might raise the hackles on more than a few dogs. His slide and harp playing are on the money, and the Workers, the excellent trio who accompany him, lend plenty of feisty energy to this blues-laden outing. Instead of over-the-top guitar or gutbucket baying, Watermelon Slim and the Workers features crisp arrangements paired with laconic insights instilling new life into a sometimes tired genre.

I first heard of Watermelon Slim from hearing/seeing the video of him doing Howlin Wolfs "Smokestack Lightning" on his website (somebody recommended I check it out). I was so blown away by what I heard that I immediately got this disc. Very few albums blow me away these days like this one. Amazing blues!

I have no clue as to whether the author of this book is alive or not in 2005 but this book is from the 80s but he comments in it that all kids need to get a good education in order to make it in life. It may sound simple but he talks about kids being placed in vocational programs which he believes only limits their growth and their salaries once they grow up. The idea behind this literature is that all kids are suited for a four year curriculum, learning topics such as philosophy and biology for example and not just being thrown into vocational programs just because of the way one may look, or from the social economic circle one may hail from. Recommended literature to all parents, home school parents, private and public school educators. It is a fast read, because i checked out this book from my public library but the information is really rare to find now a days. Get it!!!

Mortimer Adler who hails from New York talks about the kids of today learning the basics as well as to advancing to upper level work. He believes that everyone should go to the university and not just be directed toward a fast track program. He is not saying that fast track is wrong but that options should be provided for the student. A must have book that sheds light on a subject that for the most part has been blurred. If you are tired of books that repeat things over and over but which do not provide a true answer to the educational crisis that is going in America, then get this. In the end, freedom is the key to growth for the student,but the system to some extent wants your kid McDonaldized (in terms of education).

"Today I am going to show an object to you and I want you to just look at it for one minute in absolute silence, At the end of that time, please write what you saw first and what question you have about the object. Remember, no talking, because once someone talks it disrupts and alters the others thinking."
This is a book with ideas that will challenge the way you have always thought about education. Indeed, it will make you question what our educational system is doing. If the purpose of an education is the creation of a well-rounded individual who questions and reasons and analyzes, then one will have to conclude that it has been an abject failure. Indeed, our society is increasingly split along two lines - a well-educated, erudite group that has developed a mocking attitude toward traditional conventions and manners and a non-educated group that carries a growing anti-intellectual bias.

As a father who has seen his son prosper under such a program, I would recommend that any parent seriously interested in obtaining a true education for their child explore the possibilites presented in this book.

True enough this story shows how there very young men were gettin more money than some will see in a lifetime, however, it does show both sides of the game. Unlike Paid in Full, which in my opinoin is another example of how black cinema tends 2 glorify the drug game, Game Over gives you an in depth look at how this lifestly of fast cars and even faster money can quickly lead 2 ones downfall...It is a good look n2 the lives of Rich, Alpo, and AZ and it will leave you feeling speechless at how money can ruin even the closest of relationships. I gave it 4 out of 5 stars because it was so short and it didnt really go in depth about what Alpo was thinking when he did some of the evil things he did, but I guess that will all be revealed in vol. 2. This is a realistic look n2 the life that some of your favorite rappers are so quick 2 glorify w/out ever really be involved. However more importantly it shows exactly how drugs and the love of money ruins relationships and lives. AZ said in the film how all of the murders and murder attempts were inside jobs, and it is always the same story.

This is a great movie. Ive seen Wood Harris in other films and tv shows, and I like how subdued he is in this movie, but at the same time he has a great presence on screen. Camron fit in the "Rico" role very nicely hes surprisingly believable. I would recommend this movie to anyone who is a fan of urban drama.

This is a great movie. Ive seen Wood Harris in other films and tv shows, and I like how subdued he is in this movie, but at the same time he has a great presence on screen. Camron fit in the "Rico" role very nicely hes surprisingly believable. I would recommend this movie to anyone who is a fan of urban drama.

I had just moved back to Houston from Seattle when this LP dropped and was in heavy radio-rotation around H-Town. Being away from the South for so long actually made me come back with a greater appreciation for Southern hip hop and the H-Town sound.
This probably isnt the album 4 you if youre looking for a Nas "Illmatic," Jay-Z "Reasonable Doubt" or Wu-Tang "36 Chambers" type of album -- lyrical masterpieces.
Thats not to hate on Paul and Cham b/c they got somethin 2 say.
This is definitely an album you can ride 2 ... N Luv With My Money is still one of my favorites.
Its really too bad Paul and Cham fell out after this album though Im not sure Id even want them to try to top this LP if they got right again.
Fun, fun, fun hip hop album. Recommended for those who like to chill, have a good time and ride to some highly entertaining hiphop music.

Chamillionaire and Paul Wall are two of the few emcees I like in the mainstream scene. Its not because they have anything truly provocative to say, but simply because they present their rap with so much flair and style, that its impossible to overlook them. Chamillionaire has gone a more lyrical route, while Paul Wall is continuing the subject matter that the Screwed Up Click made famous in the underground in the mid-nineties. On this release, its easy to tell both men were brought up listening to Screws music, much like the rest of the Houston scene, and they use the perfect mix of harmonizing flows about Lacs and grills, over trippy, and hypnotic beats.
While its true that Paul nor Chamillionaire are profound lyricists, dropping GZA knowledge on this release, they are both damn good rappers, able to flip sweet punchlines galore. Clever metaphores abound throughout this album, while Chamillionaire sings the hooks in each song. I know Cham gets some flack for singing the hooks in his songs, and has even be labeled "50 Cent Jr." by some people because of it, but for the Chamillionaire detractors, face it Chamillionaire has a slick voice, and is one of the few rappers who SHOULD handle his own hooks(the only other I can think of is Cee-Lo, and, well, hes made a career out of crooning now).
The Swishahouse crew handle production duties, and as one would expect, thats a good thing. Its hard to get an album sounding this authentic to the Houston sound Screw crafted over a decade ago, but 4 years ago, Swishahouse brought it and theyre still bringing the tight production today. These arent songs to get crunk to these are songs to chill to. This is an ideal album to listen to whether youre taking a late night drive, or simply chilling out in your home with your headphones on. Calm, cool, and downright dope, the production on this album matches the charismatic duo perfectly.
If youre a fan of the H-Town sound, then this is perfect for you. Even if youre not, its still incredibly difficult not to love this release. If you can find it, pick it up. Highly recommended.

I enjoyed this CD quite a bit. The production is pretty good, while both rappers do show some nice lyricism throughout the CD. In my opinion does a better job than Paul Wall, but thats just me. Either way, this CD is worth buying.

In terms of mood (both martial and eerie) and structure (the score is divided into 10 suites), theres no major departure from the previous installments in the Halo series here. The biggest difference is that this time, composers Martin ODonnell and Michael Salvatori seemed to have had a bigger budget and were able to hire a large orchestra. Where the synthetic feel of the previous two CDs sometimes made them feel a little thin and cheap, Halo 3 has the means to match its ambitions: This music would not shame a big-budget Hollywood sci-fi/action movie. Tracks such as "To Kill a Demon" and "This Is the Hour" (both of which, typically, recycle the composers own themes) illustrate well this expanded sonic palette. Although i think this edition of game score is my least favorite of the three I still enjoyed it. Having two discs of content is great but it just feels like they stretched it out to much. Music doenst flow quite as well as the other two editions. All in all it has some issues IMO but I still like it and the HALO music has been wonderful and epic from the begining.

This was an excellent soundtrack! I play Halo, and appreciate the music, but this soundtrack surpassed all of my expectations. It is a powerful, clever, and intelligent soundtrack. If you are a fan of orchestrated soundtracks to movies, youll love this!
This soundtrack blends themes from the first game, and the second game, as well as a few new sounds. Also, this was performed by an orchestra, not MIDI files. The 2-disc set places the songs in the chronological order found in the game, with the rock song "LuVrFriends" at the end.
Overall, this was a soundtrack that I will continue to listen to, for a long time to come it just doesnt get old...

The HALO music is mathematical genius on a base-8 scale. The way Marty has induced variations into the orginial themes that weve all known since the first game are truly nothing short of brilliant accomplishment. Nothing bad can be uttered about HALOs music.
My favorite album so far has to be HALO 3. The dynamic range of instruments and their amplitude during crescendoes is just awesome to listen to. The music is epic, very moving and tells a story. I can just picture the game as I hear the music.
I could never get into classical music without hearing this stuff first!
The HALO 3 soundtrack is more of an orchestra type of sound more so than the others before it. HALO 2 soundtrack had a lot of popular rock music in it, as well as techo.
This soundtrack brings a return of many of the strong themes present in HALO and HALO 2, as well as Marty Odonells talented use of variation, just like a master composer. I can find no fault in this soundtrack. The music is more riveting, more vivid and clear and has a great dynamic range, especially in the vocal choir. The Flood portions of music were truly horrific, while titles like Tribute or Greatest Journey are really touching.
In my opinion, this soundtrack is the epitome in soundtracks. Its what youd expect to hear in top-budget movies. This represents the culmination of catching themes and beautiful music in a 7 year long series. My hats off to the sound team at Bungie Studios, and whoever they may have worked with. And a big congrats and thank you to Marty to creating such great music!

However with Halo 3 composers Martin ODonnell and Michael Salvatori seemed to have had a bigger budget and were able to hire a larger orchestra. Here they brought back some of the familiar tracks and tweaked them producing an outstanding soundtrack seem fit for the most successful and recognised video game in history, the unforgettable Halo 3.
Here the content is presented on two great discs, disc one containg 15 tracks and disc two containing 16 tracks. If you enjoyed Halo 3 then I recommend that you grab the soundtrack to relive those great memories of when you fought for mankind.

I got this cd four days early. It was my first online purchase and I was pleased with the package tracking. All of the music is good quality and its very different from most music I have in my collection. The pace of the music changes a lot. Track 3 of disk 2 is my faveroate beacause it motivates me. If you like veriaty then I recomend it to you.

In terms of mood (both martial and eerie) and structure (the score is divided into 10 suites), theres no major departure from the previous installments in the Halo series here. The biggest difference is that this time, composers Martin ODonnell and Michael Salvatori seemed to have had a bigger budget and were able to hire a large orchestra. Where the synthetic feel of the previous two CDs sometimes made them feel a little thin and cheap, Halo 3 has the means to match its ambitions: This music would not shame a big-budget Hollywood sci-fi/action movie. Tracks such as "To Kill a Demon" and "This Is the Hour" (both of which, typically, recycle the composers own themes) illustrate well this expanded sonic palette. Although i think this edition of game score is my least favorite of the three I still enjoyed it. Having two discs of content is great but it just feels like they stretched it out to much. Music doenst flow quite as well as the other two editions. All in all it has some issues IMO but I still like it and the HALO music has been wonderful and epic from the begining.

This was an excellent soundtrack! I play Halo, and appreciate the music, but this soundtrack surpassed all of my expectations. It is a powerful, clever, and intelligent soundtrack. If you are a fan of orchestrated soundtracks to movies, youll love this!
This soundtrack blends themes from the first game, and the second game, as well as a few new sounds. Also, this was performed by an orchestra, not MIDI files. The 2-disc set places the songs in the chronological order found in the game, with the rock song "LuVrFriends" at the end.
Overall, this was a soundtrack that I will continue to listen to, for a long time to come it just doesnt get old...

The HALO music is mathematical genius on a base-8 scale. The way Marty has induced variations into the orginial themes that weve all known since the first game are truly nothing short of brilliant accomplishment. Nothing bad can be uttered about HALOs music.
My favorite album so far has to be HALO 3. The dynamic range of instruments and their amplitude during crescendoes is just awesome to listen to. The music is epic, very moving and tells a story. I can just picture the game as I hear the music.
I could never get into classical music without hearing this stuff first!

How do you like your politics? To the left? To the right? None at all just want a good battle between aliens and humans? Im partial to the latter, personally. So, heres the deal If you like yours to the left, youll find the politics in "contact harvest" amusing and itll reinforce what you already feel about America and her allies. If you like yours to the right, youll find the constant-lifting of historical revisionist thinking from the left-copied and pasted into your favorite video game of all time.....irritating. If you "poo poo" on politics being injected into everything you see and hear on tv, in the movies, or in print media, youll find no reprieve here. To top it off, the storys not that great but that already seems to be covered by the rest of the posts here so, thought Id give you another angle.
